The governor of Zamfara State, Mahmud Shinkafi, has said that the state government has built schools, mosques and freed prisoners with collections from Zakat.
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, mandating the rich to contribute a percentage of their wealth for the upkeep of the less-privileged.
Mr. Shinkafi, on Sunday in Abuja, said that “In the Zakat implementation, our collection is the highest; we built several hospitals with what we collected and so many schools.
“Many people in prison... we go there and see if people are there because of debts or small negligence; we pay and set them free,’’ he said.
The governor said the state had also benefitted from the implementation of the Sharia Law and denied insinuations that his administration has relaxed the implementation of the Law.
